Tongue Markings And Their Meaning

According to traditional Chinese medicine, changes in the tongue could indicate different diseases. We tell you all about it in this post.

The marks on the tongue are a map of our state of health. When we are healthy, the tongue is reddish, homogeneous in color and hydrated in texture.

On the other hand, if we suffer an imbalance in an organ, this could manifest itself by changing the color or texture, or with some marks in certain areas of the tongue.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine gives us the key to interpret these changes and to prevent and improve some diseases.

In general, if we look at the tongue from the front, the map would show us:

  • Central zone : stomach and spleen
  • Lateral : Liver and gallbladder
  • Internal part: Kidneys
  • Tip of the tongue : Heart

The color

A study from 2017 indicates that the color of the tongue would give us clues about the organs that could be weaker. The yellowish colors would point to the liver, gallbladder, and stomach. The greener the color, the more it would point to the liver.

The gray color, on the other hand, would be related to the liver and the intestine. The white color could mean the presence of parasites, anemia, kidney problems, hormones, poor circulation or nutrition.

When the tongue has a white and / or yellowish coating that covers it, especially in the innermost part, the person could be suffering an imbalance in the secretion of bile by the gallbladder.

Teeth marks on the sides of the tongue

Some tongues have irregular markings on their sides, as made by molars, and sometimes the person also feels the need to expel whitish mucus.

In this case, digestion would not work properly and the nutrients would not be being absorbed properly in the small intestine. It would also have to do with the lack of minerals.

Pimples on the tongue

The pimples on the tongue are small inflamed spots that would also represent poor digestion. As well as the presence of decaying food debris in the large and small intestine.

Cracks in the tongue

Cracks in the tongue are quite frequent, and seem to be cuts of greater or lesser depth in different areas, although the most frequent are in the central area.

They would mean old problems in the walls of the colon, which is the part of the intestine that suffers the aggression of toxic acids, the result of poor digestion. This would also affect a lack of vitamins. Sometimes there may also be mucus on the tongue.

Mucus in the throat and mouth

The mucus from the throat, which can reach the mouth, and which can often cause and worsen inflammations such as pharyngitis, sinusitis, etc., would be the result of poor digestion that  has generated toxins that the body needs to expel.

If, therefore, we have a bitter taste in the mouth, this would happen due to the presence of bile. In addition, when we do not digest some foods well, causing heartburn, mucus would also be generated. Well, this would be the body’s way of protecting the walls of the digestive tract, to cover them and not irritate them.

Mouth sores

Sores are another of the marks on the tongue. These would be a symptom of poor digestion, when there are inflammations or ulcerations in any part of the gastrointestinal tract. In fact, they often appear the day after we overindulge in food.

Sometimes, the marks appear outside the mouth, in the corners and if they become severe, they can even form annoying scabs. These marks are the reflection of duodenal ulcers caused by digestive disorders.

To relieve marks on the tongue, we should start by improving our diet and detoxifying our body. If the discomfort is great and the sores do not disappear, do not hesitate to consult your doctor.

As you can see, there is an explanation for the doctors’ request to stick out the tongue to observe it. If any change in it catches your attention, do not hesitate to visit a specialist to evaluate what it could be due to.
